Excited Kenyan architecture students trip to Abu Dhabi: Sustainability in Designs.

A group of excited Kenyan Architecture students embarked on an exploration trip to the Emirates of Abu Dhabi where sustainability is alive.

For a group of Kenyan architecture students, the UAE’s gleaming capital had something far more profound to offer a living, breathing blueprint for the sustainable cities of tomorrow. What unfolded was not just a holiday. It was a lesson in possibility.

Where the Journey Began

This trip arrived at a significant moment. The dust from the recently concluded Africa Climate Summit (ACS) had barely settled, yet the conversation it sparked was very much alive. As African nations pledged bolder commitments to a greener future, one group of young Kenyan designers decided to do more than listen — they went to see it for themselves.

Because sustainability is not just a policy statement. It is a building. A street. A city that breathes.

Welcome to Masdar City

Nestled on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi lies Masdar City — one of the world’s most ambitious experiments in sustainable urban living. Home to the renowned Masdar Research Institute, this city was designed from the ground up with one bold question in mind: what does a truly livable, low-carbon city look like?

For our students, stepping into Masdar felt like stepping into the future and with kind of experiences proved that Study trips benefit Genz beyond the school life.

What the Students Discovered

The study trip was rich, immersive and eye-opening. The group explored a wide range of concepts that are quietly redefining modern architecture and urban design:

  • Thermal mass materials — how smart material choices keep buildings cool without over-reliance on air conditioning
  • Building orientation — the science of positioning structures to work with the sun and wind, not against them
  • Wind harvesting — ancient techniques reimagined through contemporary design
  • Solar farms — large-scale renewable energy in action, powering an entire urban ecosystem
  • Landscaping and land zoning — how green spaces and thoughtful planning create comfortable, human-centred environments
  • Waste management systems — integrated solutions that close the loop on urban consumption
  • Autonomous vehicles — a glimpse into car-free streets and the future of urban mobility
  • Supporting technology — the digital infrastructure that ties it all together

Each concept was not a theory in a textbook. It was a wall, a road, a shaded walkway they could touch, photograph and debate.

More Than a students trip to Abu Dhabi

What made this journey truly special was its timing and its intention. In the aftermath of the Africa Climate Summit, it served as a powerful reminder that climate action is not only the work of policymakers — it lives in the hands of designers, planners and architects.

The millennials and Gen Z students on this trip are not passive observers of the climate conversation. They are its next chapter.

By giving them direct exposure to initiatives that are making our world more livable, we are not just educating them — we are equipping them with the tools to transform their own cities, communities and continent.

A Thought to Take Home

Abu Dhabi is famous for its golden dunes and grand skylines. But what this trip revealed is that its most remarkable landmark may just be its commitment to designing a future worth living in.

As these students flew back to Nairobi, they carried with them more than photographs and souvenirs. They carried ideas. And ideas, when they land in the right hands, have a way of becoming skylines.

In the end, it’s what we do for our generations that defines us.

As the ACS summit dust settles, we still remind ourselves that our actions towards a sustainable environment also involves educating our Millennials and Genz in initiatives taken to make our world more interesting.

Masdar Research Institute

In fostering our future, we travelled to Masdar Research institute in Masdar city, Abu Dhabi to give design students an enriching perspective of the measures taken to create a livable environment. From architectural designs, landscaping ideas, land zoning, waste management as well as supporting technology.

In the study trip, we explored ideas such as material used to reduce thermal mass, building orientations, wind harvesting, solar farms, autonomous cars etc.

In the end, it’s what we do for our generations that defines us.
